A former Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver that once had a big game against the Tennessee Vols is acting as a mentor for former UT wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.
Hyatt, a third round selection by the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, was spotted at practice this week receiving tops from teammate Sterling Shepard, a former Sooners wide receiver that's spent his entire career with the Giants.
Giants beat writer Art Stapleton captured a cool moment where Shepard was coaching Hyatt in between position drills.
Shepard played at Oklahoma from 2012 to 2015, which means Vols head coach Josh Heupel was his offensive coordinator for three seasons (2012 to 2014).
The former Sooners wide receiver was front and center in 2015 during Oklahoma's 31-24 overtime win against Tennessee.
Shepard caught 7 passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns in the Sooners' win. And both touchdowns were devastating for the Vols. The first touchdown, late in the fourth quarter, sent the game to overtime. And the second touchdown was the game winner in the second overtime.
The moment between Hyatt and Shepard this week is a reminder of how small the world of football really is. Two teammates seemingly brought together at random have plenty in common thanks to their shared connection to Heupel and two prestigious football programs.
