A former Tennessee Vols defensive back who left Knoxville this offseason after five seasons with the UT football program was praised by his new head coach earlier this month for his spring game performance.

Former Vols cornerback Warren Burrell left Tennessee for Georgia Tech this offseason, returning to his home state for his final season of college eligibility.

Burrell, who signed with the Vols as a three-star recruit during the 2019 recruiting cycle, played at UT from 2019 to 2023.

The Suwanee, GA native played in 41 career games with 22 starts during his time with the Vols.

Burrell had a strong performance in Georgia Tech's spring game earlier this month, breaking up a couple of passes and coming down with an interception. Burrell's productive spring game earned some praise from Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key (Key was the offensive line coach at Alabama from 2016 to 2018…he was on staff with former Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt, who signed Burrell at Tennessee, for two seasons in Tuscaloosa).

"Warren Burrell, today, I think showed why I've been so excited about him all spring," said Key after Georgia Tech's spring game. "Just the energy he brings on the field. The playmaking ability and tight coverage he can play when he's in the game."

Burrell finished his career at Tennessee with 91 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and an interception.

It sounds like the former Vol is poised to play an important role for Georgia Tech this fall.
