A former Tennessee Vols quarterback is getting his shot to start thanks to an injury.

Kaidon Salter, a former four-star recruit from Cedar Hill, TX, went through spring practice with the Vols in 2021.

Salter was dismissed from the team in June 2021 after he was arrested for a second time due to marijuana possession.

The former Vol eventually found a new home at Liberty, though he saw limited action in 2021 with the Flames.

Charlie Brewer, a former Baylor/Utah quarterback, entered the season as Liberty's starter.

Brewer, however, is going to miss six to eight weeks with a broken hand that he suffered in the Flames' win over the Golden Eagles.

After Brewer was injured against Southern Miss, Johnathan Bennett was inserted into the game. When Bennett was ineffective, Salter got his shot. And he looked like the clear best option for Liberty.

Salter completed 8-of-13 passes for 148 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed for a team-high 65 yards.

There's no doubt that Salter has talent — he was signed by an SEC program after all. He just needs an opportunity. And now it looks like he'll get that opportunity.

Liberty will take on UAB next Saturday before traveling to Winston Salem to take on Wake Forest on September 17.
