Former Tennessee Vols standout linebacker Jerod Mayo is set to interview for an NFL job that just opened on Monday.
According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mayo will interview for the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator job.
Cleveland fired defensive coordinator Joe Woods on Monday.
Mayo is currently the inside linebackers coach for the New England Patriots.
Mayo, a two-time Pro-Bowler who played at Tennessee from 2004-2007, has received some head coaching interest in recent years and he's viewed by many as a rising star in the coaching industry.
The former Vol might view being a defensive coordinator as the next step he needs to take to become a head coach in the NFL. Mayo might also feel that seeing how things operate outside of the Patriots organization could be good for his growth as a coach.
Conversely, Mayo could view joining the Browns coaching staff as a major risk. If things continue to go south for Cleveland next season, Mayo could experience a setback in his career.
This likely won't be the only interview that Mayo receives this offseason. In fact, I think he'll get some additional looks as a head coach this off-season.
