The Denver Broncos cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday.  Unfortunately for a former Tennessee football standout, he fell just short. WR Marquez Callaway was among the final wave of cuts announced by the Broncos on Tuesday evening.

Callaway signed a one-year contract with the Broncos back in March 2023 as an unrestricted free agent.  With injuries to Tim Patrick – who's reportedly out for the season – and Jerry Jeudy, it seemed like there was a legitimate opportunity for Callaway to be able to not just make the roster, but also have an impact on the wide receiver group.

However, the Broncos ended up moving on from Callaway and keeping just four wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster, which is a very low number and especially surprising given the fact that Jeudy suffered a hamstring injury less than a week ago.

Callaway's experience and versatility should help him find another football home soon.  An undrafted free agent in 2020, Callaway signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent his first three seasons.  His best year came in 2021, when he totaled 46 catches for 698 yards with 6 touchdowns in 17 games with 11 starts.  He also has experience returning punts and kicks in the NFL, which should make him more attractive than some other free agent WR candidates.

Callaway had a knack for big plays while in Knoxville.  In his senior season in 2019, he had a robust 21.2 yards per catch average, including four games with a 25 ypc or better average.  He also had a play that helped spark a six-game winning streak to end the 2019 season.

Hopefully he'll get the chance to find the end zone for another team this fall.
