Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who previously also played for the Texas Longhorns, is in his first season with the Colorado Buffaloes this fall.

Mitchell entered the transfer portal after spending two seasons (2021 and 2022) with the Vols. After a brief stint at Arizona State over the summer, Mitchell landed in Boulder with Deion Sanders.

Last week, Mitchell spoke to reporters and he was asked about his journey from Texas to Tennessee to Arizona State Colorado.

"It's been a blessing," said Mitchell. "I've kinda been dealt a crazy hand. But I won't let that define me. My first year at Texas, after that year, we had a whole different staff — offensively and defensively going into my second year. Then after that year, (Tom) Herman got fired. And they brought in (Steve) Sarkisian. So that's when I went to Tennessee [and] did my two years there. Graduated, so it's really been a blessing."

"I've been a part of a culture at Texas where everybody is five-stars," added Mitchell. "Everybody [was] legit. And then I went to a culture at Tennessee where we were the underdogs. I came in with Coach Heup (Josh Heupel). On paper, we weren't those guys. Sneaking up on people, it made it fun. I've been able to be a part of both and take both of those and put them into one. I kinda know I'm that guy, but at the same time, I'm humble enough to know that I gotta work and prepare. I can't sleep on that other opponent. It's kind of a blessing."

Mitchell totaled 51 tackles and one interception during his two seasons at Tennessee.

That interception was a memorable one as it came during the Kentucky game last season after Doneiko Slaughter delivered a vicious hit to a Wildcats receiver which jarred the football loose. Mitchell came down with the interception and returned it 48 yards, giving Tennessee excellent field position and sending Neyland Stadium into a frenzy.
