Former Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith, who is now a Super Bowl champion thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, threw some slight shade at the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday for not drafting him in 2021.
Smith, a Jackson, TN native, was drafted by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was viewed by most analysts as a first-round talent, but there were concerns about his health (Smith dealt with blood clots during his time in Knoxville).
On Wednesday, Smith joined 104.5 The Zone's "Ramon, Kayla, and Will" and he made a subtle reference to the Titans not drafting him.
"There are a lot of times — I was frustrated not getting drafted in certain places," said Smith before pausing, offering a small laugh and emphasizing "certain places".
(The comments happen around the 13:45 mark of the video above.)
Co-host Kayla Anderson made sure to note "Tennessee" when Smith said "certain places".
Later in the show, Smith alluded to having some extra motivation when he plays the Titans.
"At this point, when I play the Titans, tighten up the helmet, it's going to be real," said Smith.
Smith made sure to point out that he's happy to be in Kansas City and he understands that everything happens for a reason.
"Man, it makes sense now, this is why I'm here," explained Smith. "I'm a two-year starter, I got a Lombardi Trophy and I'm blessed to be here."
It sounds like Smith would've loved to have been drafted by the Titans so he could play close to home, but he ended up landing in a perfect scenario with the Chiefs. And now he's a Super Bowl champion. That's something that not a lot of folks get to say.
