Hall of Fame quarterback turned NFL analyst Kurt Warner detailed the offensive malfunction that possibly cost the Tennessee Titans a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars (and the AFC South division title).
The biggest play of the game happened late in the fourth quarter when Titans quarterback Josh Dobbs fumbled after being hit from behind. Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen recovered the fumble and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.
That scoop n score ended up being the game-winning touchdown.
Warner broke the play down and explained how the Titans should've slid their protection to the left side of the offensive line based on the defense's formation.
"They made a mistake up front with the offensive line," says Warner in a clip explaining the mistake that likely cost the Titans the game.
Warner acknowledged that Dobbs needs to know that he has to throw the hot in that situation.
However, Warner also noted that Dobbs, who just signed with the Titans a couple of weeks ago, hasn't been in the system long enough to "decipher" and throw hot in that situation. Warner thinks the Titans should've helped him out by adjusting the protection for him.
(Veteran quarterbacks who have been in the system for a while would probably adjust protection at the line of scrimmage. But that's not the case with Dobbs.)
Ultimately, the Titans were in a tough spot in the final few weeks of the season. With Ryan Tannehill out due to injury, and Malik Willis looking like he doesn't belong on an NFL roster, the Titans had no choice but to turn to a quarterback that's been in Nashville for about 15 minutes.
Dobbs did the best he could under tough circumstances. But his inexperience in the offense was a roadblock the Titans just couldn't get past against the Jagaurs.
