The Tennessee Titans ended the season in a very disappointing fashion. They lost their final seven games, fired their GM and multiple assistant coaches, and missed the playoffs.
But despite all the negatives, there was one major positive to come out of this season.
That positive is rookie punter Ryan Stonehouse. Stonehouse was an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State who snatched the punting job from veteran Brett Kern in training camp. While many were upset to see Kern go, this turned out to be an incredible decision by the organization.
Stonehouse finished the year averaging 53.1 yards per punt. That breaks an 82-year-old record set by Sammy Baugh in 1940. He didn't only beat the record but smashed it, averaging 1.7 yards per punt more than Baugh did in his record-breaking season.
Stonehouse's excellence did not stop there. He also broke the rookie record for the highest net average yards per punt with 44.03. Which is easily more impressive than anything else.
Typically, players who break an 82-year-old record make the Pro Bowl. However, Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend was selected over him, leaving Stonehouse as one 2022's biggest snubs.
Despite not getting Pro Bowl recognition, the Titans announced they would send Stonehouse's Jersey and Cleats to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"It's surreal, honestly," Stonehouse said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. "It's the last thing I was expecting. But it's such a cool honor. Going undrafted, and kind of having the odds against you, to be able to do something that hasn't been done for 80-something years, it is such a big honor to me. And to break it from a guy like Sammy Baugh, it's special."
Hopefully, this record-breaking season will be the start of a long and prosperous career for Stonehouse.
