There have been a lot of folks over the last week — fans and media analysts — who have complained about rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt's lack of snaps in the New York Giants' offense.
Hyatt led the Giants in receiving in their Week 2 win against the Arizona Cardinals despite playing just 14 snaps.
The following week, Hyatt played only 16 snaps against the San Francisco 49ers and he received 0 targets in the passing game.
A bit perplexing, right?
Most seem to think it is. But one person who doesn't is Hyatt.
The former Tennessee Vols wide receiver spoke to the New York Daily News this week about his usage in the Giants' offense and he made it clear that he understands head coach Brian Daboll's plan.
“He told me it was going to be a progression, and I totally agree with him,” said Hyatt this week. “I have full trust in [Daboll].”
Hyatt also understands that the NFL season is more of a grind than a college season and the Giants are trying to keep him healthy for the whole season.
“I think with [Daboll], for rookies, it’s a long year,” explained Hyatt. “I’m used to 12 games in college and being done. So it’s making sure I’m staying healthy and able to contribute throughout the season.”
The former Tennessee standout said that continuing to build chemistry with Daniel Jones while learning all of the Giants receivers' jobs (something that New York wide receivers coach Mike Groh demands) will be key to earning more playing time.
While Hyatt knows there's work to be done, one thing is clear — he's fully bought into Daboll as a head coach.
“I love that dude,” said Hyatt about Daboll to the New York Daily News. “He’s a mastermind.”
