Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt had to wait a bit on Friday night to hear his name called but it finally happened in the third round.
The New York Giants selected Hyatt with the No. 73 overall pick.
Hyatt, who won the Biletnikoff Award in 2022 (given annually to the top pass catcher in the nation), fell in the draft for two reasons: his smallish frame and the offense he played in at Tennessee.
The feeling for some analysts is that Hyatt's route tree won't be developed enough to excel in the NFL. That thinking, however, is flawed. Hyatt was more a technical receiver than a lot of folks realized at Tennessee. He would often use different "gears" to get past talented SEC defensive backs.
There's also the fact that in 2020, he played in a more traditional offense at Tennessee under previous offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, so he has some experience in different offenses.
While Hyatt can run underneath routes and make contested catches in traffic, his main asset is his speed. And he'll instantly give Giants quarterback Daniel Jones a dangerous deep threat.
