Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs clapped back this week at an unnamed media member who years ago said he was "too smart" to play quarterback in the NFL.
Dobbs, who was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Arizona Cardinals last week, met with reporters in Arizona on Wednesday for his first time as a member of the Cardinals.
The former Vol, who is expected to start in Week One for Arizona (starter Kyler Murray will be on on the PUP list for the first four weeks of the season), was asked by a reporter if being a rocket scientist helps in football.
Dobbs, who was an Aerospace Engineering major at Tennessee, responded by mentioning the media member who once called him too smart to be a quarterback.
"I had a media guy one time when I was coming out of school, he tried to say being a rocket scientist doesn't help — like, too smart to play quarterback," explained Dobbs. "I'm like, playing quarterback's the most cerebral position in all of sports. So, definitely helps — especially study habits, processing information. I would say a lot of people are like 'hey the physics of engineering, does it help playing football' and I'm like no. But the thought process, like playing quarterback is a cerebral position as we all know, but so the ultimate problem solver position."
"Each time, you're tasked [with] 40 seconds," continued Dobbs. "You get 40 seconds and defenses are throwing different curveballs at you, from pressures to fronts to coverages. And you have a play and you get your team in the best play possible — whether it's the play called or get to a different play. And go out and execute that play and then repeat the process the next time."
I don't recall hearing the "too smart" comment about Dobbs during the draft process, but it certainly doesn't surprise me that it was said. The draft process usually includes plenty of ridiculous comments about prospects — especially quarterbacks (remember the fuss about Joe Burrow's hand size?).
Dobbs hasn't had an NFL career with gaudy numbers, but he's still managed to last six seasons already and he's preparing for his seventh season. He may not be on Patrick Mahomes' level, but he's still playing a position in the NFL that the majority of athletes can only dream of playing.
