The Tennessee Vols' biggest weakness for most of the season has been their secondary.
Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson and Alabama quarterback Bryce Young both passed for over 400 yards against the Vols earlier this season.
This past weekend against Kentucky, however, saw Tennessee's secondary play its best game of the season.
The Vols held Wildcats quarterback Will Levis, a projected first-round NFL draft selection, to 98 passing yards and three interceptions.
Part of the reason the secondary played better was the emergence of Doneiko Slaughter, who had his best game of the season against Kentucky.
Slaughter intercepted Levis and also laid a massive hit on Wildcats wide receiver Dane Key that led to an interception for Vols linebacker Juwan Mitchell.
On Wednesday night during Vol calls, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was asked about Slaughter.
And Heupel had plenty of great things to say about the Georgia native.
“I love that kid," said Heupel when asked about Slaughter. "He's gonna play a lot of football for us on Saturday (against Georgia). Where he lines up at, you know, he'll go out and play at a really high level. I love his versatility. And he's so willing to play different positions, too."
One of the great things about Heupel is the way he makes it about the players and not himself.
That's a big reason why the culture is so great on Rocky Top these days. And it's why players like Slaughter are playing with a lot of confidence right now.
