Remember last month when LSU head coach Brian Kelly was blasted for his comments about the Tennessee Vols' offense?
Kelly exposed his lack of knowledge concerning Tennessee's offense when he suggested that the Vols don't use motion or different formations.
That worked out pretty well for the Vols as Tennessee easily handled LSU in Baton Rouge, winning 40-13.
Unfortunately for the Vols, their opponent this week — Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs — is watching film a lot more intently than Kelly did.
Smart was asked by a reporter on Tuesday about Tennessee's pass-happy offense.
The Georgia head coach was quick to point out that UT runs the ball extremely well before asking the assembled reporters if they have even watched the Vols play this season.
"Yeah, Tennessee's not necessarily a pass-happy offense," said Smart. "I don't know if y'all have watched them — they run the ball really, really well. I think you can say statistically, they have explosive passes. They are a running team that chunks it deep and does a really good job with explosive pass plays. They commit to the run. There's a toughness there. Their backs run really tough."
Smart is correct — the Vols run the ball more than they pass the ball. Tennessee gets plenty of love on Sportscenter for their explosive pass plays, but they actually run the ball 43 times per game compared to 31 passing plays per game.
This will be the Vols' toughest test of the season. Smart will be as well prepared as any coach has been this season against Tennessee.
However, no one has been able to figure the Vols' offense out this season. While it's possible that Smart and Georgia will be the first team that shuts down Tennessee's offense, it's also possible that the Vols have their way with the Bulldogs' defense.
We'll all find out together on Saturday who wins what should be an epic chess match between Smart and Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel.
