The latest bowl projections from CBS Sports' Jerry Palm have the Tennessee Vols playing in a rematch of the 2010 Music City Bowl.
That's right. Palm has the Volunteers playing the North Carolina Tar Heels to end the 2021 season (except this time it would be in the Dukes Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, NC).
Tennessee and UNC played in 2010 in Nashville, just a few months after the Vols canceled their home-and-home series with North Carolina that was to be played in 2011 and 2012.
The Vols lost to North Carolina in 2010 in overtime in a bizarre ending that eventually led to a rule change in college football.
Tennessee essentially won the game. The head referee even said the game was over. UT head coach Derek Dooley shook hands with UNC head coach Butch Davis at midfield. It was done.
Then the review came into play. North Carolina had too many men on the field while trying to spike the ball to set up the game-tying field goal. If that happened in 2021, there would be a 10-second runoff and the game would be over. Instead, UNC was allowed to go back on the field, they kicked a game-tying field goal and eventually won in overtime.
Here's a clip of the wild ending if you want to relive the chaos (and relive the infamous throat slash gesture from Vols quarterback Tyler Bray).
A rematch between the two border rivals would certainly be fun. Though I'm sure Vol fans might have some PTSD seeing a first-time UT head coach play the Tar Heels in a bowl game.
