The Tennessee Titans are releasing veteran LT Taylor Lewan, according to a post made on Twitter by Lewan's Bussin' With The Boys Podcast account.
This news should come as a surprise to nobody. Lewan was owed $14.841 million in base salary next season, and had no guaranteed money remaining on his contract. He is coming off of his second ACL surgery in the last three years, and his health remains a big question moving forward.
Cutting Lewan just made sense for the Titans, who are struggling to create salary cap space ahead of the free agency period beginning March 15th. Even Lewan himself had been vocal throughout the offseason that he anticipated being cut by the team.
“In the next couple of weeks, I will be cut by the Tennessee Titans — that will happen,”Lewan said in and interview with Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com.
Now the question remains: Does Lewan still want to play football in 2023 and would he return to the Titans on a team-friendly deal?
Bringing in Lewan on a more affordable contract would be in Tennessee's best interest, but there's no guarantee the nine-year NFL veteran is interested in returning. Between his family in Nashville, his growing podcast with former teammate Will Compton, and the wear and tear professional football has on ones body, there is every possibility Lewan is ready to move on to life's next adventure.
“If I was going to play another year, my preferred spot would be where I’ve been for the last nine years. I’m a loyal guy, and it would feel very uncomfortable for me to wear a different uniform,” Lewan told Titans reporter Jim Wyatt just a couple weeks ago. But as recently as Tuesday, Lewan was shutting down rumors that he was open to a "huge pay cut" to return to the Titans.
This release may actually mean Lewan is saying goodbye to the Titans for good, and if that's the case, it's been a memorable nine years.
