Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced on Monday that former Tennessee Vols QB Josh Dobbs will start on Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This is a massive game for the Titans as the winner takes home the AFC South division title.
Dobbs started for the Titans last week against the Dallas Cowboys after being on the roster for about a week. He played well — 232 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception — despite Tennessee losing the game.
Vrabel explained the reasoning behind the decision on Monday.
"I think that there was some good decision making," said Vrabel when asked about Dobbs. "I thought he did a nice job progressing through when we gave him time. And around the line of scrimmage and coming out of the huddle and just getting us into the right football play."
"I thought he tried to take the opportunity and run with it and lead," added Vrabel. "I just think he gives us the best chance right now."
Dobbs is getting the start due to Ryan Tannehill's ankle injury and the ineffectiveness of rookie Malik Willis.
The Titans selected Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The fact that Vrabel and the Titans are going with Dobbs (who started his first NFL game last week after coming into the league in 2017) over Willis speaks volumes.
If Dobbs leads the Titans to a division title this week, there could be some interesting quarterback conversations in Nashville this offseason.
