It's no secret what the Tennessee Vols' goal is for the 2024 season.

The program hopes expects to reach the newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff in Nico Iamaleava's first season as the starting quarterback.

To reach the playoff, the Vols will likely need to go at least 10-2 in the regular season to earn an at-large bid.

On Wednesday, 247Sports revealed their preseason SEC season predictions and they have Tennessee coming up short of reaching 10 wins. They think the Vols will go 9-3 in 2024 with losses to Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

From 247Sports: Ten wins (or more) is a real possibility for Tennessee this season if the Volunteers' returning talent defensively is as good as expected and new starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava is the real deal. There's an early-season test against NC State that could come in handy come playoff selection time for the Vols if they're in the mix and trips to Athens in mid-November should be a battle of nationally-ranked teams. That's one of our projected losses for Tennessee, along with Alabama and Oklahoma.

It's clear that the national media doesn't view Tennessee as one of the top playoff contenders in 2024. Instead, they are rolling with programs like Ole Miss and Alabama (it doesn't seem like they received the memo that Nick Saban retired) to reach the playoff.

Those predictions might frustrate fans, but they should be thankful that the national media isn't trying to crown the Vols in February. Tennessee seems to be at their best under Josh Heupel when they're doubted. If anything, these preseason predictions that the Vols won't be a playoff team will just serve as motivation for Tennessee.
