Add a former Tennessee Volunteer and NFL legend to the list of people who are incredulous of the Giants usage, or lack thereof, of rookie WR Jalin Hyatt.
During the New York Giants clash with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, Hyatt was in the game late in the first half as the Giants were trying to drive to tie the game but was quickly removed after a short catch, much to Peyton Manning's disapproval.
"Now we take Hyatt out," Manning said. "Nice job. Come in for a two-yard completion and take him out."
Later, Manning made a comment calling for Hyatt to get in the game and get some catches, referencing a photo of him and Hyatt together after the Vols defeated Alabama 52-49 last year.
"That's going to will him to get involved in the game. He's going to have three catches the next time the Giants get the ball. This is what we need right here. Throw it to Hyatt. Just drop back and throw it deep to Hyatt, right?"
Eli Manning responded, "he's on the sideline right now. He's not even in the game. They don't even have the ball."
Manning – the older one – adds to a growing list of fans and media members who have noted the Giants' lack of usage in the early part of the season. Recently Brian Baldinger had some strong words for the Giants' refusal to throw deep after Hyatt's explosive showing in New York's frantic second half comeback against the Arizona Cardinals.
Hyatt, to his credit, has said all the right things about his low snap count and minimal involvement in the Giants' offense, saying he has faith in what head coach Brian Daboll is doing.
Hyatt came in the following drive after Manning's last comments and caught his second pass of the game. He immediately ended up on the sideline again.
"Come on, put him back in. What are you doing? Put him back in," Manning said.
Daniel Jones threw a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown a few plays later with Hyatt on the sideline to push the Seahawks lead to 21-3.
Peyton and Eli were speechless. Because hey, what else can you say to get the message through to Daboll at this point?
