Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia spent the summer ruffling plenty of feathers via his media appearances.

Pavia told Bussin with the Boys, for example, that Vanderbilt is going to run the state of Tennessee after the 2025 season. He also told Paul Finebaum that the Commodores are going to win the national championship this season.

“I think we’ve got the tools (offensively) and defensively to put our foot forward and win the national championship,” said Pavia to Finebaum.

“Yeah, I wasn’t cracking a joke. That’s the standard,” added Pavia when Finebaum pushed back on his comments.

Legendary former college football coach Steve Spurrier, who is no stranger to going viral for wild quotes (before going viral was even a thing), reacted to Pavia’s comments during his weekly appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast.

“Vanderbilt, quarterback Diego Pavia, Finebaum asked him how they think they’re going to be this year,” said Spurrier. “And [Pavia] said, ‘We think we’re going to win the national championship at Vanderbilt’. Now, odds are they probably will not. But if they did, at least one of the guys on the team believed they had a chance to do it. So I like his attitude.”

“You gotta set your goals high,” added Spurrier.

It’s not a surprise that Spurrier, who is as confident as anyone who’s ever coached in the SEC, is on board with Pavia’s belief in his teammates.

Pavia’s comments have rubbed plenty of folks the wrong way. But I’ve gotta side with Spurrier here. Pavia probably isn’t wise to hand out free bulletin board material to the rest of the SEC, but it’s hard not to appreciate his confidence.

After all, no one has ever won a championship in sports without being extremely confident. It’s a must.

Hooker, who is entering his third season with the Lions, started Detroit’s second preseason game this past week — a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. And unfortunately for Hooker, it wasn’t a great performance. The former […]
