One concern that some Tennessee Vols fans have had about Josh Heupel is that SEC teams will "figure out" his offense after seeing it on film for 13 games last season.

It's an understandable concern — teams will certainly have more to study while preparing for Tennessee this season. That's why Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh told reporters earlier this month that he's been working hard all offseason to make sure Tennessee's offense has a fresh look this season.

Golesh's comments should be encouraging for Tennessee fans who are worried that the Vols' offense will be more predictable to opponents in 2022.

There's also another reason why Vols fans shouldn't be too concerned about opposing defenses cracking the code to Heupel's offense this season.

Tennessee will only face four defensive coordinators in 2022 that they faced last season.

When Golesh spoke to reporters earlier this month, he talked about how it takes teams a quarter or two to "settle in" to calling a game against Tennessee's tempo.

Seeing the tempo on film is one thing. But sitting in the booth while it's happening in real-time is a completely different perspective.

For eight of the defensive coordinators that UT will face in 2022, they'll be experiencing the tempo for the first time. That's obviously a massive advantage Tennessee will have, in addition to the new wrinkles in the offense that Golesh talked about.

Now, as for the four teams with the same defensive coordinators from last season?

Well, it's certainly an advantage for those coordinators to have some experience against Heupel's offense. They won't be shocked at how fast Tennessee's offense is moving. That's why I'm extremely eager to see how the Vols play against those four defensive coordinators.

If the Volunteers are just as effective against those defensive coordinators as they were last season, it will be confirmation that Heupel can continue to adapt and evolve his offense in the SEC.

It may not seem like a big deal, but facing teams with different defensive coordinators than they had a year ago could be the difference in games against teams like LSU and Florida.
