NFL insider Jordan Schultz dropped a surprising nugget on Monday about the Tennessee Titans.
Schultz appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and suggested that the Titans were having discussions about trading for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Those discussions — whether they were internal or external are unknown — went down before Malik Willis had a solid preseason.
We'll probably never know how accurate that report is from Schultz. But if we assume it's fairly accurate, it's certainly telling when it comes to starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
My assumption is that Tennessee would've traded for Garoppolo to serve as Tannehill's backup. And he would've been insurance in case Tannehill's play trended south in 2022.
Essentially, this would've been the same move the Titans made before the start of the 2019 season when they acquired Tannehill as insurance for then-starting quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Tannehill ended up taking hold of the starting job after Mariota struggled.
If Schultz's report is true then it tells us that the Titans' front office isn't fully confident in Tannehill. At the same time, it tells us they saw enough from Willis during preseason action to feel comfortable with him as a starting option if Tannehill is injured or proves to be ineffective this season.
