NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans were hit with a significant blow this week when they learned that second-year right tackle, Nicholas Petit-Frere, is expected to be suspended for six games, according to sources. The infraction committed was a violation of the NFL's gambling policy.

Petit-Frere's suspension is expected to cost the young offensive lineman six games in this year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report.

Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that "a handful of NFL players, including Indianapolis Colts cornerback and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers, are expected to receive season-long suspensions this week for violating the NFL's policy on gambling," additionally. It is a brutal blow for Tennessee's offensive line, a group that was almost entirely reconstructed this offseason after a nightmarish performance from the group the Titans fielded in 2022. Petit-Frere's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the team, but it serves as a reminder of the league's commitment to maintaining integrity and fair play while also being in business with every major gambling entity.

The NFL's pivot on partnerships with sports betting entities is one of the most hypocritical moves in modern sports history, given the league's strong stance against it not so long ago.

It is still the NFL's right as an employer, however sanctimonious, to be able to be legislate its workforce as it sees fit. Seven NFL players, at least one assistant coach and an undisclosed number of team employees have been found to have violated the league's gambling policy in the past five years. Former Detroit Lions receiver Quintez Cephus, former Lions safety C.J. Moore and former Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were all  suspended in April for at least one year for allegedly betting on the NFL.

The same penalty was levied against Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley in 2022, when he was with the Atlanta Falcons, and former Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw in 2019.

Lions receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams were also suspended for six games for allegedly placing bets — not on NFL games — while at a team facility. New York Jets receivers coach Miles Austin was suspended by the league in December for "wagering on table games and non-NFL professional sports," according to Austin's legal representation.
