The Tennessee Vols received some more bulletin board material this week ahead of their matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night in Knoxville.
South Carolina edge rusher Jatius Geer spoke to reporters earlier this week and he was asked if Tennessee's wide splits and extremely fast tempo will be a challenge on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium.
"I don't think it's much of a challenge," said Greer. "I just think up front, we have to focus on getting pressure on the quarterback to help out the secondary a little bit more."
Tennessee hasn't really been able to get their tempo going for a full game this season like they would prefer. That's for various reasons, including pre-snap penalties, poor execution, and missed opportunities in the passing game.
But when the tempo gets going, it can wear out a defense incredibly quickly — especially a defense like South Carolina's that mostly plays the same five defensive linemen throughout a game (per Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer).
In Geer's defense, he played at Syracuse last season before transferring to South Carolina. So he doesn't have previous experience going against the Vols' tempo.
But he'll find out in a hurry on Saturday night (if the Vols are operating as they hope) how challenging the tempo can be.
Tennessee and South Carolina kick off at 7:30 PM ET.
