Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers: Under 7 Goals (-102)

This series has cooled down a bit following a 14-goal outburst in Colorado’s 8-6 victory in Game 1. The last two games have gone under the total with backup goaltender Pavel Francouz standing on his head for the Avalanche.

Francouz has been just part of the problem for the Oilers’ offense. Forward Connor McDavid and the top line for Edmonton has struggled against Colorado’s physical defensemen, whose main objective is to slow him down. Francouz will aim to replicate his shutout performance in Game 2 if he gets the nod from head coach Jared Bednar tonight.

It won’t be any easier for McDavid after the NHL handed down a one-game suspension to his linemate, Evander Kane. The punishment fits the crime after Kane’s dangerous hit on Nazem Kadri near the boards left the Avalanche center’s status in serious doubt.

Edmonton will have to look elsewhere for offense this evening as Kane has had a dominant postseason, lighting the lamp 13 times in 15 games to lead all goal scorers.

Defense travels in hockey, which bodes well for Colorado after finishing second in the Western Conference in goals allowed during the regular season. Look for the Avs to pay extra attention to McDavid without the scoring threat that Kane provides on a nightly basis.

Tonight’s wildcard comes in the form of Oilers goalie Mike Smith. Edmonton’s netminder was putting together a nice postseason prior to this series. Though he has been roughed up in his last three outings, head coach Jay Woodcroft is sticking by his side in Game 4.

The pace these two teams play with can tire out some of the premier players in this series. However, this goes for the defensemen too. The third period in elimination games can go haywire in a hurry, but I fully anticipate Smith and the Oilers to pick themselves off the ice and deliver a strong effort defensively.
