Former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier has been taking shots at the Tennessee Vols for three decades and it doesn't look like he'll be slowly down anytime soon.
Spurrier recently joined Open Mike with Mike Bianchi to discuss the ongoing conference realignment drama, among other topics.
The Tennessee native said he's in favor of Florida State joining the SEC at some point. And then, out of nowhere, Spurrier lamented the fact that Tennessee didn't play Florida State every year in the 90s like Florida did.
“I used to sit back and say, ‘How come Alabama and Tennessee are not playing FSU like we have to every year?’ Because in the ‘90s Nebraska was actually the winningest program in the country and FSU was second,” said Spurrier. “I mean those guys, they had ballplayers all over the place. And I think we were third and Tennessee and Miami were after that back in the ‘90s.”
Tennessee only played Florida State once in the 90s — which was the Fiesta Bowl in early 1999 that completed the Vols' perfect season.
Leave it to Spurrier to always find a way to get in a jab at Tennessee. But hey, that's part of what makes SEC football so great. Without characters like Spurrier, the conference wouldn't be nearly as compelling as it has been over the years.
