The Tennessee Vols basketball program received some not-so-great news on Friday to begin the weekend.

According to On3, Vols guard BJ Edwards has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Edwards is a former four-star recruit from Knoxville who signed with Tennessee during the 2022 recruiting cycle. He was rated as the No. 19 point guard in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee.

This past season, as a true freshman, Edwards played in just 14 games and averaged 1.2 points per game. He never played more than 10 minutes in a game.

The Vols likely didn't see Edwards as a viable option to start the season as the team's starting point guard while Tennessee waits on Zakai Zeigler's return from his ACL injury. It's unfortunate, though, to lose a talented player from Knoxville who just couldn't carve out a role in Rick Barnes' rotation.

Tennessee has added three players to their roster from the transfer portal this offseason, but none of those players are point guards.
