Before Josh Heupel was the Tennessee Vols' head coach — and before he was in the coaching profession in general — he was a star quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Heupel led Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000 while playing under Bob Stoops.

The South Dakota native was also a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2000, but he finished second in voting to Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke.

(Heupel got the last laugh since the Sooners beat Florida State in the BCS Championship game a couple of weeks later.)

As a result of his fantastic collegiate career, Heupel is one of numerous former players on the 2024 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The National Football Foundation, which oversees the College Football Hall of Fame, revealed the ballot on Monday.

From NFF release: 2000 consensus First Team All-American and Walter Camp Player of the Year…2000 Heisman Trophy runner-up who led the Sooners to a national title at the 2001 Orange Bowl…2000 Big 12 Player of the Year who left OU with virtually every school passing record despite only playing two seasons.

Heupel isn't the only player with a Tennessee connection that's nominated for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Former Vols wide receivers Willie Gault and Larry Seivers are also on the ballot that was revealed on Monday.

The inductees will be announced in early 2024. The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on December 10, 2024.

There will also be an "NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments" for each inductee during the 2024 season.
