Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel was asked during Vol Calls this week about appearing on the weekly call-in show as the 2022 SEC Coach of the Year.
Heupel won the award last season after guiding Tennessee to its first 11-win season since 2001. He also led the Vols to massive wins over Florida, LSU, Alabama, and Clemson.
While Heupel is undoubtedly proud of winning the award — mostly because it meant that Tennessee experienced success last season — it's an award that's in the past for him. Heupel isn't worried about what happened in 2022, he's only focused on 2023.
"That was a long time ago, man," said Heupel when the award was mentioned. "You look back to January when our guys got back, end of January, what they’ve put in as far as their work and all offseason long. Training camp’s been great. This group’s been really mature, really competitive. They’ve got a great camaraderie and it is time to go hit somebody in a different color.”
That's the approach of a coach focused on the right things. There are plenty of college football coaches who revel in winning personal awards, but Heupel isn't one of those coaches. He's focused on this team and this season. Heupel knows as well as anyone that last year's success means nothing for the success of this year's team.
