OLB Harold Landry, the Tennessee Titans' 2021 sack leader, needs a new contract.

Here’s what an extension with the Titans, or a contract with a different team in free agency, could look like.

THE FLOOR FOR LANDRY

Landry wants to be the highest-paid member of the Titans' outside linebackers room, according to a report from Buck Reising.

That would mean surpassing OLB Bud Dupree's contract value, which he signed in 2021.

Here are the details of Dupree's deal:

  • Length: Five years
  • Total value: $82 million
  • Guaranteed: $35 million
  • Average annual value: $16.5 million

Landry would certainly get at least that on the open market, and he will want more than that if the Titans re-sign him.

THE CEILING

Someone whose salary Landry likely won't exceed is DeMarcus Lawrence of the Cowboys.

Lawrence signed the following contract in 2019 after recording 25 sacks over the previous two seasons.

  • Length: Five years
  • Total value: $105 million
  • Guaranteed: $65 million
  • Average annual value: $21 million

Landry's production over the past two seasons isn't as good as Lawrence's before he signed that deal. Lawrence also remains the highest paid of second-tier edge rushers⏤those who are talented and productive but not elite.

TWO GOOD COMPARISONS

Trey Flowers' 2019 contract with the Lions is a good comparison for what Landry may be able to get. While Flowers is a stylistically different player than Landry, their value on the open market should be similar based on position and production.

Here's a look at Flowers' contract:

  • Length: Five years
  • Total value: $90 million
  • Guaranteed: $56 million
  • Average annual value: $18 million

Another interesting deal as it relates to Landry is that of Buccaneers pass rusher Shaquill Barrett, which he signed in 2021.

Barrett was fresh off a Super Bowl title and two seasons in which he combined for over 27 sacks. Here's what his efforts yielded him:

  • Length: Four years
  • Total value: $68 million
  • Guaranteed: $34.25 million
  • Average annual value: $17 million

That puts Barrett's average value at just over Dupree's which, again, is the floor for a new Landry deal. Barrett likely did take a slight discount to help Tampa keep its super team together, but his recent sack production was also better than Landry's.

FRANCHISE TAG?

The projected franchise tag value for an edge rusher in 2022 is $17.5 million.

CONTRACT PROJECTION FOR HAROLD LANDRY

Landry will certainly make more than Dupree, and there's probably a good chance he surpasses Barrett's deal, too, because of the franchise tag value. Flowers' deal, though close to what Landry should get, may prove too rich for most interested teams.

Here's what a new Landry contract likely would look like:

  • Length: Five years
  • Total value: $88.25 million
  • Guaranteed: $50 million
  • Average annual value: $17.65 million
