The Tennessee Vols are one of three teams still in the mix for one of the nation's top 2023 wide receivers.
Aidan Mizell, a four-star wide receiver, revealed his top three schools on Tuesday and he included the Vols, along with Alabama and Florida.
Mizell, 6-foot-2/180 lbs from Orlando, FL (Boone), is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 14 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 19 player in the state of Florida. He's also ranked as the No. 91 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.
Here's the scouting report on Mizell, via 247Sports southeast recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins:
One of the fastest wide receivers in the class of 2023 given long speed. Size is unverified, but looks to be over 6-foot-1 and gifted with longer limbs. The son of a former All-American sprinter who has also made a name for himself on the track having gone as low as 10.65 in the 100-meter dash and 46.99 in the 400-meter dash. Is quick to stem and stack defensive backs. Agile enough to create separation as he works his way up the field. Owns a surprisingly large catch radius and has shown that he can win 50-50 balls in some situations, but ability to simply catch the football without breaking stride more times than not might be the most promising attribute. Could probably make a living just running go routes one day, but has shown that he can also produce chunk plays via quick bubble screens, at least at the prep level.
That scouting report makes Mizell, who plans to announce his commitment on July 29, sound like a perfect fit for Josh Heupel's up-tempo offense.
The only problem is that Florida is viewed as the favorite to land the elite wide receiver.
There's some hope, though, that Mizell could surprise folks and choose Tennessee. He told Rivals.com last month that Tennessee was "tied" with Florida.
“After Florida, they were my leading school,” said Mizell. “Then after the Tennessee official, I was like, dang, it is a tie. Then after the Georgia official, dang, another tie. I have to think a lot about this decision. Every official so far has been a tie.”
The Billy Napier era in Gainesville isn't off to a great start. If Mizell spurns the Gators for the Vols (or Alabama), we're likely going to hear a whole lot of groaning coming out of the Sunshine State.
