Tennessee Vols true freshman running back Cam Seldon hasn't received many opportunities this season — that's mostly because he's playing behind a three-headed monster that's pacing one of the best rushing attacks in the nation — but that hasn't changed how UT's coaches view the talented former four-star recruit.

Seldon, a Virginia native who was rated as the No. 77 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, has just three carries for five yards this season. But Vols running back coach Jerry Mack (and Seldon's teammates) is still confident that the dynamic young running back, who could also play wide receiver or running back if he needed to, will be a star in the SEC.

“I think you could talk to any of our running backs that’s in our room right now and they’ll all tell you that guy’s a future star," said Mack this week during Vol Calls (via 247Sports). "First of all, the way he approaches the game. Cam is very quiet, he’s mild-mannered. And he doesn’t get too high. He doesn’t get too low. He does something great on the field in practice or in a game, he’s the same way, even-keeled all the time."

“And that’s what you’re going to need to have success," added Mack. "But the other part of it is just the development part. He needs to run the ball between the tackles as much as he possibly can to get used to it and get accustomed to it. But we’ve got a lot of football left in this season. We’ve got spring football. We’ve got fall camp. He’s going to have so much time to just continue to grow and get better."

"But the physical traits, you can’t hide — like, the size, the speed. When he touches the ball on special teams, it’s just a difference. His burst, his pop is different than everybody else’s.”

That last sentence is exciting to read. Tennessee's running back room already has some impressive burst — especially with sophomore Dylan Sampson.

But it sounds like Mack is expecting Seldon to be even more electric. When you combine that expected burst with what Seldon can bring in the passing game, it's obvious that Tennessee has a player that has the potential to drive opposing defensive coordinators mad.

Senior running back Jabari Small will likely be moving on after this season. And junior running back Jaylen Wright's been good enough that he could test the NFL waters after the season. It'll be tough to see those players leave Rocky Top (if that's how it plays out in the offseason), but it's exciting to know that Tennessee has a player as talented as Seldon waiting in the wings.
