2024 four-star Tennessee Vols commit Boo Carter caused a bit of a stir this week when news broke that he's visiting Colorado this weekend for the Buffaloes' game against Colorado State.
Carter, who is rated as the No. 4 player in the state of Tennessee, is a two-way player who is expected to mostly play on the defensive side of the ball for the Vols.
The talented recruit is hoping to play offense and defense at Tennessee, which is why some fans are worried about his trip to Colorado.
Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, has garnered national attention this season for the way he's used former five-star recruit Travis Hunter on both sides of the ball (which has led to plenty of attention for Hunter).
The fear is that Carter could be swayed by Coach Prime to flip to Colorado to become a household name like Hunter has quickly become this season.
Carter, however, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that he's only visiting Colorado this weekend because Tennessee is on the road (against Florida). He also mentioned that he wants to experience the atmosphere at Colorado while he's a recruit.
“Tennessee is not at home this week, they’re at Florida," said Carter. "With all the TV crews that will be there and the environment they will have at Colorado, it should be exciting, and I just wanted to be a part of that.“
I think that's more than understandable for Carter to want to experience that environment. What's happening at Colorado right now with Sanders is unprecedented. And while no one knows how it will end (is it real or it will completely implode), it's certainly an intriguing story right now.
Carter only gets one chance to be a high school recruit and take these visits. And this visit to Colorado could be a wild story he's telling on a podcast in 10 years after he's had a successful career at Tennessee and he's playing in the NFL (assuming that's his goal).
Is there a chance that Sanders flips Carter and Tennessee doesn't sign him?
Sure. Recruiting is always fluid. And no one ever knows what's actually going to happen with a recruit. But that's the world of college football. And it's something that fans just have to accept, since it's completely out of their control.
By the way, Tennessee has told Carter that they're willing to play him on both sides of the ball, they just want him to focus on defense when he first arrives.
"When I had the meeting with them, they told me they were going to use me on both sides of the field," said Carter to On3 after his commitment to Tennessee. "I’m going to be on defense more, but they’ll use me for both.”
“Coach Heupel wants me to play offense, but since I got an offer as a DB first, he said I’ll play DB but I can learn the plays to get to offense," added Carter. "He keeps it real, he’s a good coach, and I like how he treats the players. I know I could fit in at that program.”
For now, it's best to take Carter at his word. It's really the only choice Vols fans have, otherwise they'll drive themselves mad trying to figure out what a high school senior is going to do.
