One of the Tennessee Vols' top 2023 commits received a big ratings boost on Tuesday.

Daevin Hobbs, a defensive lineman from Concord, NC, went from being a four-star recruit in 247Sports' rankings to a five-star recruit this week.

Hobbs also went from being the No. 38 overall player in the nation to the No. 20 overall player in the nation. And he's the No. 3 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of North Carolina.

If the Vols are going to win a national championship under josh Heupel — and we saw this season that Tennessee is definitely capable of getting to the playoff under Heupel — then they need players like Hobbs.

While the Vols' defense showed flashes of playing well this season (against LSU, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt), it was still ultimately the reason why Tennessee didn't make the playoff (the South Carolina game says it all).

Loading up elite defenders like Hobbs, however, should have the Vols in a prime position to make the playoff in the coming years.
