Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who landed at Colorado this offseason, was part of one of UT's most exciting plays of the 2022 season, but he didn't play in the Buffaloes' shocking loss to Stanford on Friday night (a game in which Colorado held a 29 point lead at one point).
After the game, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was asked about Mitchell's absence.
A visibly annoyed Sanders told reporters that Mitchell is still with the team and that they'd have to ask the former Vol why he hasn't played the last two weeks.
Mitchell spent the first part of his college career at Texas (he led the Longhorns in tackles in 2020) before transferring to Tennessee ahead of the 2021 season. The former three-star recruit left Tennessee after the 2022 season and landed, albeit briefly, at Arizona State.
According to 247Sports' Chris Karpman, Mitchell wasn't a good "cultural fit" at Arizona State, which is what led to his transfer to Colorado late in the offseason.
"There were several incidents that happened in the last couple of weeks related to tardiness or attitude issues with Mitchell that have been discussed with him on multiple occasions," explained Karpman in August. "Then there was an incident at Saturday's practice. He left prematurely before the end of practice. The congregation basically was like hey look, we've already expressed that this is our standard — this is what we're going to hold everyone to. Just because you happen to have been a starting linebacker at Tennessee and at Texas was the top tackler prior to that, it doesn't mean that you get covered by a different standard. If we let you get away with a different standard, what does that say to everybody else as we're trying to establish our culture?"
Mitchell is obviously a talented player, but for whatever reason, he just hasn't been able to find a way to stay out of the doghouse recently. He's still with the team according to Sanders, so maybe this will be a wake-up call for the former Vol.
