CBS Sports' Josh Pate, the host of Late Kick recently power ranked the SEC football programs based on the last three years (on-field production, recruiting, resources, etc).
Pate has the Tennessee Vols in the middle of the pack, ranking UT at No. 7, behind Georgia, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss.
From 247Sports: Pate: “There was late change in the power rankings here in six and seven, because we had Tennessee above Ole Miss for most of the afternoon, but then the more we looked at it, the more we said, ‘Hold on.’ … Splitting hairs here. You could easily put Tennessee at No. 6. Twenty wins in the last two seasons. They’ve beaten Alabama. Josh Heupel is a top-15 recruiter. And they’ve got deep pockets there. The resource pool is not in doubt. They’ve got a chancellor who will go to bat for them. They’ve got an AD who will go to bat for them.”
This feels about right. I think it's pretty clear that Georgia and Alabama are at the top. And Texas at No. 3, coming off a College Football Playoff appearance this past season, makes sense.
The programs ranked between No. 4 and No. 7 could almost go in any order based on the last few seasons. Tennessee actually has one more win than LSU over the last three years, but the Tigers have probably the best in-state recruiting situation in college football.
Ole Miss and Tennessee have been fairly similar the last couple of years and either could be ranked above each other. It's just a matter of preference, which is essentially what Pate pointed out.
A few years ago, the Vols probably would've been at the bottom of this list. It's incredible what athletic director Danny White and head coach Josh Heupel have accomplished since arriving in Knoxville in early 2021.
