The Tennessee Volunteers' 49-13 win over the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday in Nashville was enough to finally get from AP poll voters what they should have a little bit earlier: entry into the top 10.
The Vols jumped from 12 up to 9 on Tuesday, one spot behind Washington and one ahead of Notre Dame, who trail the Vols by a mere 8 points. LSU, who lost to Florida State 45-24, fell to 14 and Clemson, who lost to Duke 28-7, fell all the way to 25. Texas, who beat Rice 37-10, held at 11.
The opinions on Tennessee among the voters range widely. The Vols peaked among voters as high as 6, courtesy of Stephen Hargis of the Chattanooga Times-Free Press. Rece Davis of ESPN also had the Vols above their ranking, coming in at 7 on his ballot. The lowest mark was from Michael Niziolek of the Bloomington Herald-Times, who had the Vols all the way down at 15. Niziolek and John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader were the only two to have the Vols below 15 in the preseason poll – both at 17 – but Clay has the Vols now at 13.
Tennessee has a chance to move up – or perhaps down – a spot or two this week, as #10 Notre Dame travels to NC State and #11 Texas goes to #3 Alabama for the national game of the week.
Regardless, what the Vols do in their six games following Austin Peay – and no, UT-San Antonio should not be slept on – will largely define their season, rather than some media members with an apparent bone to pick.
