The Tennessee Vols made a huge addition this week by securing a commitment from former five-star wide receiver Bru McCoy, a USC transfer.
McCoy was ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the 2019 recruiting class. He hasn't played since 2020 when he caught 21 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns in six games for the Trojans (USC only played six games in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
While the California native hasn't seen the field in a couple of years, there's no denying that he has immense upside.
One recruiting analyst went as far as calling McCoy a potentially "dominant" wide receiver, before comparing the Vols' newest addition to an NFL Hall of Famer.
247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins said this week that McCoy is "way underrated", before adding "I think he can be a dominant outside receiver".
How dominant?
Biggins sees some Michael Irvin, the Hall of Fame wide receiver who won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, in McCoy's game.
“I think he’s a big, physical, super-strong kid," said Biggins. "Unbelievable compete level, phenomenal blocker, does whatever it takes to win, great teammate. Just from a physicality standpoint, I think he’ll be one of the most physical receivers. He kind of has a game — I used to kind of compare him to, like, a Michael Irvin type, because he can use his body really well to kind of, like, box out smaller guys."
“He’s a good athlete," added Biggins. "He wins 50-50 balls. He wins jump balls. Super-strong hands. I think he’s got a little better athleticism than he’s given credit for.”
I don't think anyone is expecting McCoy to come to Tennessee and play at a Hall of Fame level — that would be silly to expect that.
But the talent is definitely there for McCoy to be one of the best wide receivers in the nation. If he can get on the same page with Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker, then he could team with Cedric Tillman and Jalin Hyatt to create one of the most lethal wide receiver groups in the SEC.
Josh Heupel had a lot of work to do on the roster when he arrived in Knoxville a little over a year ago.
The roster is certainly in a better place today than it was a year ago, which is a testament to the work that Heupel and his staff have put in over the last 15 months.
