The Tennessee Vols went into Kentucky's backyard this weekend and stole a recruit from the Wildcats.
Kentucky badly wanted four-star defensive back Cristian Conyer, 6-foot-1/165 lbs from Bowling Green, KY.
Conyer, however, chose the Vols over the Wildcats.
After announcing his commitment to Tennessee, Conyer spoke with Rivals.com about his decision.
The Kentucky native noted that his strong relationship with head coach Josh Heupel and secondary coach Willie Martinez had a strong impact on his decision to commit to the Vols.
"Coach Heup (Josh Heupel) and Coach Nez (Willie Martinez), I talk to them on a daily basis," explained Conyer. "Every morning they text me 'good morning' and I text them and we chop it up and I usually call them later in the day. I really feel like they've been my coaches already."
Conyer also noted that he has the same goal as Tennessee's coaching staff — winning a national championship.
"They plan on going and get that national championship and I'm gonna be there with them," said Conyer.
It seems like every recruit in the Vols' 2023 class has mentioned a national championship. It's not about "bringing Tennessee back" for these coaches and players, it's about winning a natty. That's their singular focus. And they're not worried about what's happened at UT over the past 15 years, they're focused on the future.
With that kind of mindset, anything is possible on Rocky Top.
