The Tennessee Vols missed out on an elite four-star recruit that announced his commitment on Friday.

2024 four-star cornerback Cai Bates, who was committed to LSU from July to November, committed to Florida State on Friday.

Bates, 6-foot-2/185 lbs from Orlando, FL, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 9 cornerback in the nation and the No. 94 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.

Tennessee was the other main contender for Bates' commitment.

Bates, who took several visits to Tennessee, told On3 that he committed to Florida State in part because of their ability to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff on an annual basis. He also noted that playing for a program in his home state was a factor.

“Definitely being in my home state and playing for a competitive team that’s always gonna compete for the College Football Playoff,” said Bates. “And just knowing that I’m gonna be around genuine people and people that I’m actually very familiar with who really care for me as a person and not just a football player.”

Tennessee currently has the No. 12 ranked 2024 recruiting class in the nation.
