Former Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith, who now plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, met with reporters this week and he was asked about the blood clot issues he dealt with during his time at UT.

Smith missed five games in 2018 after blood clots were discovered in his lungs.

The Tennessee native returned to play in 13 games in 2019 and all 10 games in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. But the threat of the blood clots caused Smith, a first-round talent, to slip to the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

"Yeah, none whatsoever," said Smith when asked this week if he's had any more issues with blood clots. "I’ve been completely healthy. You’ve got to really give a major shoutout to the University of Tennessee (and) their medical staff for doing their due diligence to making sure I was safe to play and just safe in my overall life as well. Then the Kansas City Chiefs medical staff as well."

"Just making sure that they were comfortable with the plan and like I said, we’ve had zero instances (and) zero issues whatsoever and it’s been clean. I thank God for it and I’m just thankful for my overall well‐being.”

It's unfortunate that Smith's issues with blood clots scared teams away from drafting him early in 2021. But the draft selection aside, it's wonderful to see Smith healthy and thriving in the NFL. He's a great ambassador for the University of Tennessee and a tremendous human in general.
