Former Tennessee Vols OL Cade Mays was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the No. 199 pick on Saturday in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Mays had one year of eligibility remaining but he passed up the opportunity to play another season on Rocky Top to chase his dream of playing in the NFL.
The Panthers are getting a steal by landing Mays in the sixth round. The former Vol, who started his college career at Georgia, is at least a second-round or third-round talent.
So why did Mays fall in the draft?
It was almost strictly due to some injury concerns. The Tennessee native was banged up at times last season and forced to the sideline.
In Mays, the Panthers are getting a versatile offensive lineman who can play anywhere on the line of scrimmage. Mays, however, will most likely play guard in the NFL.
When Mays is on the field, he can be dominant. He played 493 sacks and only allowed one sack last season. If Mays can stay healthy, it shouldn't take him long to carve out a starting role in Carolina.
