The Miami Hurricanes fired offensive coordinator Josh Gattis on Friday and a former Tennessee Vols player/assistant coach has been named as a potential replacement for him.

Gattis was fired after just one season at Miami. The Hurricanes had the No. 97 scoring offense (23.6 points per game) in the nation in 2022.

Those obviously aren't great results, but the timing of the decision is still odd. Miami will now have to compete with Alabama and possibly Georgia (if Todd Monken leaves for the NFL) when it comes to hiring an offensive coordinator — though the Hurricanes might not be looking at the same pool of candidates as those two programs.

On Friday, after the Gattis decision was made public, 247Sports' David Lake put together a list of 14 candidates that Miami should consider.

And former Vols quarterback/wide receivers coach Tee Martin was on that list.

From 247Sports:

As the offensive coordinator at USC in 2017, Martin mentored Darnold, who became USC’s first-ever 4,000-yard passer in 2017 before being selected with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Darnold and running back Ronald Jones (1,584 rushing yards) teamed with wide receiver Deontay Burnett (86 catches, 1,114 yards) to form the nation’s No. 13 offense (484.1 yards per game) in 2017. USC won the Pac-12 Championship that season, finishing 11-3 and advancing to the Cotton Bowl.

Martin coached at USC in some capacity from 2012-18.

As a wide receivers coach and/or passing game coordinator, Martin has experience coaching at Power Five programs like Kentucky and Tennessee.

Martin would be a fit with Cristobal from a recruiting standpoint. In 2016, he was named 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year and he was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award in 2017.

Martin is currently serving as the Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach, but heading to Miami to call plays could be a very realistic option for the Vol legend.

Kaden Martin, Martin's son and also the younger brother of Houston Texans wide receiver Amari Rodgers, is a freshman baseball player at Miami. Heading to South Beach would allow Martin to see more of his son's baseball games than he would otherwise be able to catch.

Martin called plays at USC, so he has play-calling experience. He also has plenty of recruiting connections in the southeast, as well as the west coast from his time with the Trojans. It's too early to know how viable he is as a candidate, but he could certainly be an intriguing option for the Hurricanes.
