The Tennessee Vols received some great news the day before taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores in the regular season finale.

2023 five-star defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs announced his commitment to Tennessee on Friday.

Hobbs, 6-foot-4/270 lbs from Concord, NC (Jay M Robinson), is ranked by On3 as the No. 3 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina. He's also rated as the No. 20 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

The North Carolina native committed to the Vols over Alabama and Georgia.

Here's the scouting report on Hobbs from On3:

Nimble jumbo athlete who makes big plays as a tight end and defensive end, likely projecting along the defensive line long-term. Has good size, measuring at 6-foot-4.5 and in the 250-pound range with a wing-span close to 6-foot-10. Shows dominant tendencies as a two-way star at the high school level. Finished with 20 tackles for loss and 8 sacks as a junior. Moves well at his size. Shows the athleticism to run down plays in pursuit. Has the closing speed to finish plays behind the line with authority.

Hobbs will give the Vols' 2023 recruiting class a big boost. And he'll give the defense a boost, too.

Tennessee has struggled at times defensively this season. But one big reason for that has been a lack of elite talent. Players like Hobbs, however, can help turn a below-average defense into a great one. This is a huge pickup for the Vols. And it shows that despite the disappointing loss to South Carolina, the Volunteers are still very much trending in the right direction.
