The Tennessee Vols lost a battle on the recruiting trail on Monday, but they didn't lose the war.
2024 five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri committed to the Missouri Tigers on Monday afternoon, choosing Mizzou over Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee, and Oregon.
The Vols weren't expected to be the pick for Nwaneri — it was really down to Missouri, Oklahoma, and Georgia — but the talented defensive lineman is still a player that Tennessee would've loved to have on their roster.
There's speculation that Missouri's new state NIL law — which reportedly allows in-state high school players to earn NIL money once they've signed a financial agreement with an in-state program — had a significant impact on Nwaneri's decision.
After Nwaneri's commitment, Missouri, for reasons I don't quite understand, released a video of Tigers head coach Eliah Drinkwitz celebrating the news.
And it's one of the most cringeworthy things I've ever seen.
There's a lot to unpack here.
For starters, why is Drinkwitz sitting on a couch holding a baseball bat as he waits on Nwaneri's decision? That makes no sense — unless he's channeling Tom Cruise's character in A Few Good Men. And I think we all know that Drinkwitz isn't going to be mistaken for Cruise anytime soon.

While the bat cameo is confusing, it's the celebration that's easily the most cringeworthy part of this video. Drinkwitz literally jumps into the arms of (what I assume is) another coach when Nwaneri announces his decision.

I have no problem with the grown man jumping into another grown man's arms to celebrate. We see that celebration in sports all the time — it's just usually reserved for no-hitters, winning a pennant, or a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. It's not something we usually see when a program lands a five-star recruit.
The old adage "act like you've been there before" definitely applies here.
By the way, Nwaneri alone isn't changing the trajectory of Missouri's program. Drinkwitz is still very much on the hot seat and it's going to take more than one five-star defensive lineman to compete with Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee in the SEC.
Kudos to Drinkwitz and Missouri — they got their guy. But this all-time cringe moment probably guarantees that it'll be the last five-star recruit that Drinkwitz ever lands.
