A Tennessee Vols true freshman received an impressive national honor this week.
On3 revealed their preseason All True Freshmen All-American teams on Tuesday and Vols linebacker Arion Carter was included.
Carter is a former four-star recruit who signed with Tennessee over Alabama.
Vols fans probably won't be surprised to see Carter included on On3's All True Freshmen All-American team. The Tennessee native has received a significant amount of praise this offseason from coaches and teammates.
"The athleticism you can't hide," said Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks in March. "I was really pleased with the instincts that he showed in coverage. I think a lot of times for linebackers, typically when they come out of high school, they are guys that just come off the edges or guys that are just thumpers inside. For you guys who saw him in play in high school, you know he was a tremendous running back, obviously blossomed as a linebacker. He's got really good instincts, and like I said, I was pleased with what he showed in coverage."
"You get guys like that and you can tell kind of pretty quickly that they're a little different, right? They're built a little bit better than everybody else," added Vols tight end Jacob Warren earlier this month. "They're a little bit stronger. A little faster. But just his mental game. The way that he's able to play middle linebacker at such a high level, at such a young age — it's great to see."
Carter is set to serve in a backup role in 2023, but the true freshman should still see plenty of action for the Vols this fall.
