Tennessee Vols true freshman running back Jaylen Wright is hoping to be the next Alvin Kamara on Rocky Top.
The Durham, NC native, who signed with the Vols during the 2021 recruiting cycle, recently spoke to reporters and he mentioned that he models his game after Kamara, a fan favorite in East Tennessee.
"I really mold my game after Alvin Kamara," said Wright. "I know he does a lot of going to the slot and catching the ball out of the backfield. I know that the more you catch, the more money you're going to make in the future."
Wright, 5-foot-11/200 lbs, was one of the fastest players in the 2021 recruiting class, reportedly running a 4.28 in the 40-yard dash. That's an elite level of speed that could shine in Josh Heupel's offense.
Speaking of Heupel, what's interesting about Wright is that he originally signed with Tennessee during the early signing period when Jeremy Pruitt was still the head coach.
Wright, however, is a much better fit in Heupel's offense (Heupel loves getting his playmakers out in space). That's a fact that's not lost on Wright.
"It's a better fit, actually, because I feel like this offense just gets me out in space, and when I get into space, I’m gone” said Wright (via 247Sports).
"This offense, we have a lot of like, plays where they're sending the running back out the backfield to do like a little route in the slot," added Wright. "So yeah, I love this offense.”
Wright will likely be splitting carries with Tiyon Evans, Jabari Small, Tee Hodge, and Dee Beckwith. He's also expected to be a factor on kickoff returns.
