The Tennessee Volunteers' head coach Rick Barnes is going to be in Knoxville for a while longer.

The university issued a statement on Tuesday announcing a contract extension for Barnes, which will go through the 2027-2028 season.

"We are thrilled to be able to extend Rick and continue to build on the tremendous men's basketball program he has developed here on Rocky Top," Tennessee athletic director Danny White said. "He has infused a fantastic culture within our team and our players have represented Tennessee in a first-class manner both on the court and in the classroom.

"Our fans have responded to help create an electric atmosphere on gamedays and I can't wait to watch the Vols continue our quest for more championships under Rick's leadership."

Tennessee basketball has seen a steady level of success under Barnes, as the Vols have made the NCAA tournament for five consecutive seasons (2018-2023) while also earning a top four regional seed four of those times.

The school won its first SEC basketball tournament championship since 1979 in March 2022 in Tampa, ending one of the more ignominious streaks in the men's athletic program. Barnes' 2018-2019 team also reached the #1 ranking and remained there for close to a month in a special season that saw the Vols reach the Sweet 16 and come heartbreakingly close to advancing well beyond.

The extension is one that is very logical, as Barnes has helped make Tennessee a relevant name in the college basketball community, regardless of those who would point to his tournament record.

Now, it will be up to Barnes to build off of those solid successes.  Make no mistake, being a regular tournament team and competing for the SEC tournament championship is a very good place for the Tennessee men's basketball program to be at, but the program has the talent, facilities, and leadership to rise even further.

With Santiago Vescovi, Josiah-Jordan James, and (eventually) Zakai Ziegler back, and a couple of impact transfers added in, Barnes will have the makings of a good team again in Knoxville this season to try to take the next step that fans so desperately want to experience – a first-ever trip to the Final Four.

How Rick Barnes helped land Tennessee Football’s latest transfer addition

It truly is a family environment in Knoxville when it comes to Tennessee Vols athletics. And a story from Tennessee Football's most recent transfer addition just further confirms that family environment. On Thursday, the Vols landed BYU transfer cornerback Gabe Jeudy-Lally. Jeudy-Lally, who played his first three seasons at Vanderbilt, will fill an important need for […]
