The Tennessee Volunteers have had some truly gut-wrenching moments over the 15 years that passed between their last trip to Atlanta (2007) and the hiring of Danny White and Josh Heupel. According to one national media outlet, the Vols could get a chance to redeem themselves from one of those failures.
247 Sports has their bowl projections up following Saturday's games, and they project the Tennessee Volunteers to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL.
As many Vol fans will likely recall, the Vols and Tar Heels met in the 2010 Music City Bowl. The Tar Heels led 17-14 at half, but Tennessee's defense held UNC scoreless for almost the entire second half, as UT clung to a 20-17 lead with a handful of seconds left and the clock ticking down.
Despite the clock running out and the officials saying the game was over, the play was reviewed, and UNC was given one second left to try a field goal. This was despite them running players off the field, for which they were flagged. However, the 10-second runoff rule was not in effect, so they were granted one second despite their own misfeasance. Needless to say, Casey Barth booted the kick through, and UNC would go on to win in two overtimes.
The game prompted a rule change that has since required a 10-second runoff for all penalties by the offense that causes a clock stoppage inside the final minute of the half. Unfortunately, the basis for it – of course – came at Tennessee's expense.
Now, the Vols could end up getting another shot at the Tar Heels 13 years later. And it would be a great challenge for the Vols, as QB Drake Maye – a projected top five NFL draft pick – and a strong UNC offense would pose a fun and challenging matchup for the Vols.
And could help heal a long-standing wound from a forgettable era.
