It’s often said the NFL is a copycat league. Those who struggle to flourish attempt to mimic the strategies of those who find the most success. To that point, the Houston Texans shamelessly and blatantly stole from the Tennessee Titans.
On Tuesday, the Texans announced the hiring of former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as the team’s next head coach. Ryans will be Houston’s third coach in as many years. In his 10-year career as a player, Ryan spent six seasons in Houston.
On Thursday, the Texans welcomed him into the building with open arms.
That video might look familiar to Titans fans, especially after Tennessee’s staffers enthusiastically welcomed general manager Ran Carthon into the family on January 19.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Typically when one attempts to repurpose something, the newer copy is souped up to look better and more impressive than the initial version. Apparently Houston didn’t get that memo.
Somehow, the Texans actually cheapened the Titans’ concept despite having two weeks to improve upon the original product.
Perhaps the Texans were hesitant to go all out for Ryans after he sued the team in 2016, claiming to have suffered a career-ending injury on NRG Stadium's turf field. But the team’s decision to hire him indicates that time does heal all wounds.
At the end of the day, this isn’t the first time, and probably won’t be the last time, the Texans failed to match a Titans’ product. Then again, creativity hasn’t exactly been Houston’s forte over the years.
